This time last month Tony Maher could barely walk. But now the 59-year-old, who has been crippled by pain since 1998, is planning to celebrate his 60th birthday in September by cycling one of the Tour de France's toughest stages. The ex-Irish Air Corps officer, from Edenderry, Co Offaly, is now flying high by cycling 150 miles EVERY week to prepare for his mission to conquer the 2,645m Col du Galibier Alpine climb.
Tony, who has been unemployed for three years, said he still can't believe he'll now be able to live his dream."It's a miracle I've been given a chance to cycle part of the Tour de France route and doctors are baffled by my amazing recovery," he said."I could hardly walk four weeks ago but now I'm out on the bike every week clocking up the miles. I was always a keen sportsman and now I feel 20 years younger. "I'm also waiting on having work done to my knee but this won't stop me hitting the roads. "I was in a terrible state a few months ago but now I've been given this chance to enjoy life again." The dad-of-three hailed a wonder supplement, Lyprinol, containing oil from the New Zealand Green Lipped mussel for his miraculous recovery.
